Big Peat is a blended Scotch whisky from the independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co. It is a vatting of single malts from across Islay, including Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila, and Port Ellen. The whisky is known for its distinct smoky, peaty flavor, as well as a hint of sweetness. The whisky is named after the well-known historical figure Big Peat, who was a notorious pirate who sailed around the Hebrides in the 1700s. As a tribute to his notoriety, Big Peat is bottled at a ‘big’ cask strength of 46% ABV. Big Peat is a popular whisky for the more experienced Scotch drinker. It has plenty of smoky and earthy notes to be enjoyed, but also a touch of sweetness, from the sherry cask maturation. As such, it is a great whisky for after-dinner sipping when paired with a cigar. It would also make a great alternative to other Islay whiskies, should you want to experiment with different smoky flavors.
