Gekkeikan is a Japanese sake brewery that was founded in 1637 – making it one of the oldest companies in Japan. Since then, it has become one of the most respected and recognizable sake brands in the world. Gekkeikan has a wide variety of different types of sake, each made with different ingredients and combinations of rice, water, koji (fermenting spores) and yeast. Gekkeikan has won awards in several sake competitions in Japan, including the National Sake Award and the National Brewers’ Association Sake Competition. Gekkeikan produces a variety of popular sakes, including old-style sake, "Sparkling" carbonated sake, and "Flaschenbier" sake brewed with lager beer yeast. Some of their most famous varieties are the "Original" Junmaiginjo sake, the "Kijoshu" which is a dessert-style sake, and the "Gekkeikan Horin" daiginjo sake which is produced with Yamada Nishiki rice that is grown in the local area.
